In the case of the DOS analogy, DOS apps are only guaranteed to be able to read the files off of the same disk, not necessarily interpret files generated by other apps.  Hopefully we've gotten a bit smarter, leveraging a more common set of data formats (through microformatted XHTML) and other characteristics.
